About the
Matrix Audio ND-1 Reference Audio DAC.

The Matrix Audio ND-1 is a dedicated high-end audio DAC created for separates-based desktop Hi-Fi systems. Focused purely on digital-to-analog conversion, it combines advanced circuit design, premium components, and thoughtful tuning to produce a transparent, low-distortion, highly detailed sound with a rich and natural tonal balance.

At its core is AKM’s flagship DAC platform: an AK4191EQ delta-sigma modulator paired with dual AK4499EX DAC chips. This “1+2” architecture assigns independent left and right channel conversion, improving channel separation, phase consistency, jitter suppression, signal-to-noise ratio, and dynamic range. A custom ultra-low phase noise femtosecond clock provides accurate timing, while a DPLL clock synthesis circuit supports external clock reference operation for use with a 10MHz master clock such as the Matrix Audio SC-1.

The ND-1 is generously equipped for source connectivity, with optical, coaxial, AES/EBU, IIS-LVDS, and both USB Type-B and USB Type-C inputs. All digital inputs use electrical isolation to help block common-mode interference and ground loop noise before the DAC stage. On the output side, the ND-1 provides both XLR and RCA analog outputs with selectable output levels and a 100-step digital volume control, allowing direct connection to a power amplifier or active speakers without needing a separate preamp.

One of the ND-1’s most distinctive features is its selectable analog output character. Using Lundahl precision transformers in the output stage, it offers a timbre switching function between Transformer and Op-Amp modes. Transformer mode emphasizes warmth and an analog-like presentation, while Op-Amp mode delivers speed, precision, and high resolution. The digital and analog sections are laid out on separate boards and powered by a multi-winding toroidal transformer with multiple LDO regulators for low-noise linear power delivery. The chassis is finished in CNC aluminum and fitted with Matrix Audio’s MA-DAMPER PRO vibration-control system.
