Peter Qvortrup founded Audio Note UK in 1991 around a single conviction: that a hi-fi system’s job is to deliver the emotion of a performance, not its measurements.
Three decades on, his hand-built, silver-wired components — assembled in Hove, England — are widely considered among the most resolving audio reproduction available. Audio Note builds nearly every part itself: silver and copper-foil capacitors, silver-wound transformers, hand-selected NOS valves, and amplifier topologies that have not been redrawn since the company learned which ones, by ear, were right.
Qvortrup is known across the high-end industry as a contrarian — a man who measures, and then politely sets the measurement aside. He believes the listening room is the instrument, and that an amplifier’s job is to disappear inside the music. The result is gear that is small, hand-finished, and disproportionately expensive — and gear that, played in the right room, regularly stops conversation.
